Stacking Outdoor Chair and Armchair.

The original brief for Re-al was to design the most economical aluminium chair possible. The basic architecture was quickly agreed with the manufacturer, but how to give the chair character and a presence without affecting the production costs? The answer came in the form of a very slight curve (R1500mm) on the seat and backrest when viewed from the side. This simple little trick made the chair look much more relaxed and fluid, like a hand-drawn line.
Re-al is made of 80% recycled aluminium and is fully recyclable.

What if a cane was very slightly curved instead of being the usual straight stick ? How would it affect its perception, and would it eventually influence its holder’s stance ?
R5000 stands for the curvature radius (5000mm) applied to the tubing.
R5000 is an anodized aluminium cane I designed for the « Walking Sticks and Canes » show curated by Keiji Takeuchi and presented during the Milan Design Week at the Triennale Milano in April 2024.

Lounge chair
Upholstered PU foam with and steel tubular frame.
Produced by Arrmet, Italy 2023
Dopo is a generous and open lounge chair. While many of the contemporary lounge chairs are aimed to isolate yourself from your environment, Dopo invites you to relax while keeping in touch with your surroundings. Its very open seat and its wide headrest let you adopt a wide range of positions to relax.
Also, ‘Dopo’ means ‘After’ in Italian. It’s a seat made for all the ‘afters’, after a long day, after a nice meal, after work, the best moment to relax and take it easy… It can also be the ‘after’ of procrastination, the ‘I’ll do it after…’ !
The collection is composed of 3 versions : Relax, Bergère and Lounge.
Seating system
Plastic seat shells (with or without arms) combined with 5 different bases (PP, Steel, Wood).
Produced by Cerantola, Italy 2023
Thanks to the combination of its two shells and its numerous bases, Loria provides a simple and uncompromising seating solution to a wide variety of contexts and situations. The result of an extensive development work in search of the most suitable production processes for the most demanding functions, Loria is a seating system designed to be flexible and comfortable in everyday use, while remaining affordable.
Out of the 5 bases I designed for the Loria seating system, the one I am particularly happy with the outcome is the 4 legged plastic base.
It is technically pretty straight forward, very simple to mould, without any gas injection involved. No hidden trick or twist to achieve this shape, and yet it has all the rigidity and durability that is required for such a chair.
This simplicity in manufacturing allowed to keep the price down, resulting in very affordable chairs and armchairs which don’t look basic or ‘low-cost’.
As a designer, it’s the kind of balance I am constantly after while designing a new chair, but honestly it’s a very difficult one to achieve. It is only possible when there is a true and open collaboration with the manufacturer.
Depending on the countries, Loria is sold through the Colos brand or the Cerantola group, its mother company.

Stackable wooden chair and barstool.
Painted or Stained Wood

Designing a stackable wooden chair is a tricky business. Wide back, narrow seat, the necessary ingredients for stackability do not always contribute to a harmonious form. With the April chair, my primary intention was to reduce as much as possible these characteristics that make wooden stacking chairs look bulky. To achieve this, I kept the back legs as low as possible, allowing the visually light back to continue upwards with minimal materials.

When designing the Daily chair, I made sure the tubing structure wasn’t just a functional element. I wanted it to be the key element to the visual coherence of the chair.

Following the production of the first Piani shelves which confirmed the assembly principle and its stability, I thought we should push the concept further and complete the family with some tables.

While designing "Piani", I was after a balance between the weight of the steel and its structural properties. The idea was to produce something that could only be achieved in steel, and that embodied a certain paradox, contrasting its physical heaviness with its visual lightness. Fucina was the perfect manifacturer to whom to propose this concept. Their exceptional craftsmanship and their great attention to detail perfectly translated the original intention into a high quality product.

When I was told by Industry+ we had the opportunity to make a chair prototype with a Japanese bentwood manufacturer, I decided to experiment with a chair shape that could only be achieved with steam bending. In that sense, Kei can be considered as a research on the formal expressiveness of the wood bending process.
